It is small, very calm and peacefull place with kind people. Birgi is famous with it's architecture. A lot of local tourists come here to see famous "Birgi houses". I decided to tell you about Birgi because very few people out of Turkey know about this place. I was very impressed by it's houses, mosques, baths and streets.
Birgi is situated 120 km. far from Izmir. When you enter the town you feel that even air smells with history here. You can easily imagine how people were living here hundreds years ago. The first settelment in Birgi is presumed to extend up to 3000 B.C.
Birgi is listed in the World Cultural Heritage list and contains fine examples of traditional Turkish architecture.
The town is small. So i think it is enougth to spend there one or maybe two days. But be sure, you will not be able to see anything like these in any other place.
The biggest treasure in the town is Çakırağa Konağı (Çakırağa Mansion).
It was built at the end of the 18th century by rich merchant Şerif Ali Ağa. Preserved in its original style it is one of the rare houses of the Aegean RegionInside the house was decorated with charming wall and celling painting.
The next place is Ulu Camii (The Grand Mosque). It was built between 1308 and 1312 years by Aydınoğlu Mehmet Bey. I really was empressed by mimbar (pulpit beside the mihrab).
If you come to Birgi you will find more mosques, fountains, medrese, tombs and wonderful streets. I just show you some of my pictures. Maybe one day you would like to come here too and be sure, you will enjoy.

It is one of the most beautiful example of Seljuk ornament art. It made of walnut tree by Muzafferuddin Usta, the famous master of wood carving, without using a single nail or glue.
Mihrab (niche in mosque wall indicates the direction of Mecca) with turquoise figures.
